Walking Stones: A Celtic Sojourn Specifications

On this evocative disc of instrumental music, dulcimer player Ken Kolodner is assisted by guitarist Robin Bullock and fiddle player Laura Risk (of Cordelia's Dad). Walking Stones includes several traditional Irish and Scottish pieces as well as a number of original compositions. Subtitled A Celtic Sojourn, the album does indeed give a listener the feeling of going on a journey, mainly because of the otherworldliness of the material and the ethereal quality of the hammer dulcimer. From the dancing rhythms of "Father Kelly's," "The Bornish Polka," and "Reel Beatrice" to the gentle delicacy of "Clock Waltz," "Princess Beatrice," and the title track, this music is nothing short of beautiful. There are more than 30 pieces in all, most quite short; however, they are arranged on the CD to flow smoothly one to the next, so the briefness of the songs is never distracting. --Genevieve Williams

Gentle Breeze: Celtic Music for Flute & Whistle

Gentle Breeze: Celtic Music for Flute & Whistle Review

This collection of pieces originally recorded for the Green Linnet label is ideal for anyone who loves Celtic music, the flute, or both. The music runs the gamut from fast-paced and exciting ("George White's Favourite/The Sligo Maid," "Kitty in the Lane/Captain Kelly/The Green Mountain") to slow and sweet ("Raibh Tu ag an gCarraig," "Gwerz ar Marc' hadourig Bihan/Autrefois Disait un Guerrier/Ton Derobee") to everything in between. There are quite a few standout pieces as well; "Gan Ainm/Emily's" has a traveling feel to it, and "Seamus Ennis' Jig/Connie O'Connell's" is an excellent flute and fiddle duet. The most exciting piece here, however, is "Paddy and the Bandit," featuring a fiddle and drum backing that adds considerable drama. Flute and whistle are the lead instruments here, so much so that it's sometimes hard to hear the backing instruments, but this is overall an excellent sampler. --Genevieve Williams Read more...

Celtic Spectacular

Celtic Spectacular Review

What you will get out of this indeed spectacular hour of Celtic music performed by the indefatigable Cincinnati Pops, its conductor Erich Kunzel, and a bevy of guest stars depends entirely on what you bring to it in the first place. If your experience of Celtic music consists of playing it in a pub, with no amplification beyond what your own lungs or motor skills can bring, it's going to be an hour in one of the inner circles of hell. If you like simple arrangements of Irish and Scottish tunes for the instruments of the classical orchestra, it may be a bit much. If you're intrigued by the idea of Celtic music itself and its persistence in American culture, you're going to enjoy the range of music and treatments here, as well as the surprisingly detailed booklet notes exploring the careers of such forgotten figures as Chauncey Olcott, who did as much as anyone else to popularize the "Irish" song. And if you are a fan of Riverdance, Lord of the Dance, and the smaller similar theatrical spectacles, you're going to love this album. And, one might add, if you're looking for a workout for your top-dollar stereo equipment, this album (as the name Telarc usually signifies) represents a good investment. Kunzel offers music ranging from traditional tunes to full-blown Hollywood spectaculars. The orchestra backs off to give the guests space, as for example on the Chieftains' Chasing the Fox medley, typically coming back in full force later in the track after the tune has been introduced. The inclusion of Simple Gifts, featuring James Galway, is interesting; it is indeed an American tune, but one patterned on Celtic melodies, and it has now made the leap back across the pond. There are several vocal tracks, including the ever-present Danny Boy, sung with a nice, circumspectly clear measure of conventional sentiment by tenor John McDermott. In all, an unusually ambitious effort from the group that is arguably America's premier pops orchestra.-All Music Guide Read more...
